Excerpts:

YORBA LINDA The City Council on Tuesday reviewed proposed dates for an election on the “Right to Vote” initiative that would give residents final approval of major development projects. A number of residents expressed support for the initiative, saying they don’t want dense housing developments in the downtown core.

Council members were considering two dates in January for a special election, with an estimated cost of $110,000 or consolidating the initiative vote with the June 6 primary at a cost of $55,000. Officials said they worry the initiative’s passage would open the city to lawsuits and disrupt affordable housing programs.

Issues

The initiative was sparked by a $200 million redevelopment project planned for the Old Town area.

The Plans

Town Center: The Town Center conceptual plan approved by the city would bring up to 200 houses and townhomes and 170,000 square feet of commercial space into a 20.5-acre area that would include specialty shops, restaurants and a high-end grocer.

New zoning: Proposed changes to the area’s zoning for a 130-acre area, including the Town Center, would allow up to 501 housing units and 512,691 square feet of commercial space.
