YORBA LINDA – - More than 15 percent of the city's registered voters have signed a petition seeking a public vote on major projects - forcing the city to call a special election or adopt the proposal outright.
The Orange County Registrar of Voters verified signatures for the "Right to Vote" initiative Wednesday.
The initiative is similar to the Greenlight Initiative passed by Newport Beach voters in 2000. It requires a public vote for major projects and changes to city development codes - with a focus on projects that add homes.
"Oh, baby, 15 percent. We did it," said Jim Horton of the Yorba Linda Residents for Responsible Redevelopment.
The group, which circulated the petition, feared the city would allow five-story buildings and up to 50 homes per acre in the Town Center.
