THEN: MARCH
The Unocal Corp. unexpectedly withdrew
plans for its La Floresta home development after originally
submitting them to the city of Brea in November 2003.
The project plans had included 1,100
homes – a portion set aside for seniors – along
with a recreation center and retail space, all set on the company’s
120-acre property partially bounded by Valencia Avenue, Imperial
Highway and Rose Drive.
A week later, the company sought and
received a permit that would allow it to demolish all of
the buildings on the property, including the famed, crescent-shaped
Hartley Center.
NOW
A development plan submitted in August
to the city by Chevron Corp. – which recently took
over Unocal – revealed revamped plans that go beyond
the original development.
The submittal included the originally
planned 1,100-home development, but added another piece of
land, the Birch Hills Golf Course, to La Floresta.
Some 220 homes would be built on the
course near the corner of Birch Street and Kraemer Boulevard – nearly
90 affordable housing units to be rented out and another
130 townhomes. A community center would also be built. The
18-hole golf course would remain.
WHAT’S NEXT
As Chevron Corp. waits for its application
to be deemed complete, a company will be named soon to perform
an environmental assessment of the plan.
The assessment could take a year to
complete, Development Services Director Charles View said.
The application is available for public
viewing at the Planning Department counter, 1 Civic Center
Circle. Information: (714) 990-7600.
