The Orange County Register
YORBA LINDA — The Orange County Registrar of Voters today gave City Clerk Kathie Mendoza a raw count of verified signatures for a referendum petition that would block adoption of the new Town Center Zoning Regulations.
Mendoza was informed of the verification so she could prepare a report for Tuesday’s council meeting, though the Registrar report is not yet officially released.
The registrar made a raw count of two petitions – one with 9,790 signatures, the other with 9,771. Random sampling of 500 signatures on each returned 442 and 440 valid signatures, respectively, enough to pass the referendum.
One petition targets a zoning map, the other the regulations that would allow 501 homes and 560,012 square feet of commercial space on 60 acres at the city’s town center.
Yorba Linda Residents for Responsible Redevelopment turned in the two petitions to Mendoza on Jan. 17 after three weeks of gathering signatures. The group needed 4,104 valid signatures to overturn the building limits.
“This shows that there is certainly a number of people that were not thinking in the same lines of the City Council,” said Jim Horton, member of the Yorba Linda group. “We got 25 percent of the voters signatures in 22 days. That’s pretty unheard of.”
If the referendum is certified, the city can repeal its ordinances, set an election or call for a study before deciding on a course of action.
